What is PRINCE2

John Smith

At FDM, our Project Support Officer Consultants receive certified training to ensure they are well equipped going into a project and dealing with different documentation. But what is PRINCE2?

PRINCE2 is an established and proven best practice in project management. PRINCE2 stands for Projects in a Controlled Environment and is owned by AXELOS, a joint venture by the UK Government and Capita PLC, designed to be an experiential project methodology that can be tailored to both the project and the organisation.

PRINCE2 focuses on products, such as Project Initiation Documents, Risk Registers and Gantt charts , rather than activities. These products help project managers to highlight how long a project will last for and what areas might be riskier than others. PRINCE2 is well established and widely understood which creates a common language for all participants in a project.

Key features of PRINCE2:

By giving you greater control of resources and a more effective ability to manage project risk, PRINCE2 allows a formal recognition of the responsibilities within a project. The PRINCE2 methodology provides projects with a common and consistent approach; a controlled start, middle and end as well as regular reviews of progress against the plan.

As PRINCE2 is adopted in many counties worldwide including Australia, France and Japan, the methodology is fast becoming a global one. Further, individuals undergoing certification can have their knowledge and competencies examined by AXELOS or through local associations, such as the British Computer Society. These certifications range from Foundation level to Professional depending on an individual’s experience.
